| With the growing popularity of e-commerce via internet there is a trend
towards cashless payments also in off-line commerce. Although online
commerce today still takes place mainly within national borders, innovative
e-payment solutions may facilitate cross-border online commerce by offering
cross-border payment options. While the bulk of online commerce has settled
for established payment methods, such as credit cards, direct debits or bank
transfers, innovative e-payment solutions struggle for market shares. Any
new e-payment solution must offer a clear value added over existing services
on which they build on (e.g. increase safety, convenience) and keep the
interests of merchants and online buyers in balance. Innovative payments
will therefore also be impacted by SEPA. Ultimately, a few innovative
e-payment options will reach a critical mass across Europe. For further
